Day #8: Bye L!

Now it's Monday (November 23, 2009), and L was leaving the Bay Area. Originally we had planned to go down with lil J and A on Thanksgiving morning, but L had some business to take care of back in socal and she left 3 days early. Her flight was at like 6 PM or so, leaving Oakland International.

By this time, I was not feeling good. I had a tiny headache and was extremely cold and snotty. But I was strong enough to function. I knew I had something and soon enough it will hit me hard, but I had to be strong and not waste my days away, especially on L's last day.

We (me, L, and lil J) started the day early (early in the sense that it started before 4 PM). We took the Bart to Berkeley, then walked over to Gregoire in East Berkeley. Back in May '09, we ate at a Thai place near Gregoire's for lil J's graduation lunch. L and I commented on how cute Gregoire looked and lil J said, 'next time you guys are back in town, I'll take you there,' well promise well kept.

Gregoire is really cute. It's this tiny little shack of a restaurant that sells gourmet food. Apparently the chef used to cook at a really prestigious restaurant but did not like the restaurant politics and wanted to do things his way and opened up Gregoire (all this according to lil J back in May).

I ordered the flaky ling cod w/ avocado & fried onion on grilled lavash (and unknown to me, lil J had ordered the same thing. If I knew I would have changed my order so we all got something different and take nibbles at each others food) and L got pulled pork sandwich. I also drank my very first apple green tea which was weird at first, but delicious eventually. And lil J made sure that she ordered the crispy potato puffs which were heavenly delicious. They are mashed up potatoes formed into a ball and what else? fried, served with garlic aioli (I effin love garlic aioli). They were wayyy better than the potato balls from Porto's. I wish I actually had some crispy potato puffs right now.

the so yummy crispy potato puffs

After lunch we proceeded to walk back to college town of Berkeley. L wanted to buy a red peacoat she saw at Gap at Union Square, but they did not have her size. So the plan was to go to Bay Street and find the peacoat before she left.

So we walked back into town, stopped by a Starbucks (for me of course) and lil J called her college friend who was kind enough to drive us to Emeryville for some quick shopping. At the shopping center, we made it mission and went straight for the targeted store. L was unsuccessful at finding her peacoat. It was sold out.. everywhere (as in northern & southern CA). Her only choice now was to buy it online (which she did when she got back to LA). So mission fail.

By this time it was like 4 PM or so and L had a flight to catch. Lil J's friend drove us to a BART station nearby and we said adios and went back to Oakland. By this time, we've been walking so much that my LA legs were tired and I was sick and cold. We were fighting time and we had to buck up. Eventually what happened was, lil J with her bay area legs sped walk to the apartment, grabbed L's suitcase and told us she'll eventually meet us down in the lobby of the apartment and to take our time walking. [heh, let me add here lil J made us exit like 21st st from Bart, when we usually exit 19th and made us walk about 3 or 4 blocks more than we usually do]

Once again, we were finally back on the Bart heading towards the airport. We were cutting it super close. It was like 5:30 PM when we finally got to the Bart station exit and had to take the AirBart (bus) to the airport. Lil J and I were going to let L take the AirBart by herself since it costs another $3 to ride, but we were afraid that she might not make her flight if she had to check in her bags. So the plan was if we were super late, then we'll take her bag back with us and she'll just have to get it all back 3 days later. Well, she made the flight, but her bags did. So lil J and I took her bags and she called A to pick us up.

By this time, I was so pooped (and cold). Lil J was pooped too. Then when we got back home, I don't know what happened, but both of us almost died. It was like we turned into jello once we knew the day was over. All our symptoms heightened and we had no energy to do anything, but sleep. Both of us had fevers of over 100. Lil J thought she had swine flu and complained she was dying. I was dying too. Both of us wrapped ourselves up with blankets and slept at like 8 PM.

Eventually I woke up at like 2 AM, sweating and decided to take a shower, but once I got up, my legs shook and I thought I was going to collapse. So I just laid and read some news on my blackberry and tweeted away until had some energy. We were so sick. Like I couldn't breathe, my coughs were horrendous, I needed tissues constantly, shivering, popping pills like there was no tomorrow. It was horrible. But that was Day #8.
